James Butler purchases freedom for $1 from Richard Spencer at the age of 37 years old in 1812. Butler had at least 13 acres in area known as Butlertown by 1820. Richard Spencer was the owner of Gray Wolf Inn and several hundred acres of land in Piney Neck area. George Washington traveled through there.
