On HJanuary 11, 1939 a group of women, the wives, mothers, sisters, daughters and widows of
Thomas H. Kiah Lodge No. 101 met to form a study club to become Eastern Stars. Sister L.V.
Matthews, District Deputy Grand Matron and Sister Mary ane Henry, Past Grand Worthy Matron
of Myra Grand Chapter met with them to give instruction.

On March 12, 1939, the club met under the direction of Sister Marcelena A. Dorsey, Grand
Worthy Matron; Brother Philemon D. Phillips, Grand Worthy Patron; and Sister Clara E. Harris,
Grand Secretary and other Grand Officers to give the Order of the Eastern Star degree to 21 club members. They became Sarah E. Travers Chapter No. 50, named after past Grand Worthy Matron
Sarah E. Travers who served Myra Grand Chapter from 1925-1927.

On Spetember 21, 1940 new members were elected and the club continued to function through
May 1942. The Chapter was inactive from May 1942 through November 1945 due to a lack of
interest. In December, 1945 Past Grand Worthy Matron Alma H. Ringgold was interested in re-
activating the chapter and sent Grand District Deputy Elise Elsey on March 21, 1946 to work with
the Chapter.

The past 59 years, Sarah E. Travers Chapter No. 50 has successfully been an active and functioning chapter. In September, 2001 we celebrated our 45th Anniversary under the leadership of Past
Matron Marietta Hynson and our 51st Anniversary in September of 2007 under the leadership of
Past Matron Mary C. Grinnell. This event also honored our chartered members. September of
2011 an Appreciation Banquet was held to honor our Worthy Patron of 18 years Gilbert C.
Hynson.

We have active members who were charter members from September, 1956, Past Matron
Dora Brown and Past Matron Dorothy Brown. We have had four members serve as Grand
Appointed Officers, Sister Dorothy Campher (deceased), Sister Lucille Warren(deceased), Sister Jacqueline Veeney, and Sister Catherine T. Boyer. All served as District Deputy Grand Associate
