Alphonsa would like Wickes to intervene in a matter regarding her enslaved man Charles. There is a dispute about whether he was hired by Mr Smith or Mr. Vannort. Charles was sent to deliver a letter to Vannort but brought it to Smith. While this was happening Vannort came to Blake with the constable to look for Charles. Vannort agreed to forgive Charles if he apologized, which he had not done as of the Thursday. Smith had hired him to Vannort so it is up to Smith to make these arrangements. Charles' wages will be docked for that day and Blake urges Wickes to convince Charles to apologize.
