James A. Jones (1805- ), an African American, sold a one foot square plot of his land to fifty-two African American men for the sum total of five dollars. James owned lot 96 on the south side of Cannon Street in Chestertown. He sold his one foot square plot since land ownership afforded one more rights including the right to vote. In selling this small plot of land James gave the right to vote to these men. May 20 1871
